Using Coconut As A Profoundly Healthy Fat

Posted by Rose Robertson on Monday, 8 March, 2010

The coconut is a beautiful gift to the peoples of the world. The Sanskrit language calls the coconut palm ‘kalpa vriksah,’ meaning that it is a plant which gives everything one needs to survive. The coconut is an old tree and a distant relative of grasses, and its meat, water and oil have been used for nutrition and health by many cultures. In India in particular, the coconut has been used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine, a system which has inspired aromatherapists, nutritionists and naturopaths the world over.

Taking approximately nine months to filter each liter of water in its shell, the coconut makes an amazing natural water filter. The water is drawn up through micro-fibers which purify it before it ends in the actual nut of the coconut. This clear life-giving coconut water isone of the highest sources of electrolytes found in all of nature. Coconut water is a wonderful re-hydrator and makes an excellent sports drink. When we consume a drink consisting of 55% fresh coconut water and 45% fresh green-leaf juice, or blue-green algaes, we give ourselves an instantaneous infusion of life energy.

In the inquiry on healthy versus unhealthy fats, coconut oil tips the scales in terms of its nutritional value. While it is a saturated fat, not all saturated fats are harmful for us. Coconut oil is cholesterol-free and does not change into a trans-fat, which means it can be used at high heat. It has also been shown that coconut oil is more powerful than olive oil in controlling cholesterol. Also, because it is a medium-chain fatty acid, it is easier for the body to digest, meaning the fat can be used more readily as fuel.

Coconut oil is one of nature’s most versatile and health-enhancing fats. Studies show that coconut oil supports the health of the thyroid gland, which regulates thenecessary anti-aging steroids progesterone, DHEA and pregnenolone. These steroids are required to help prevent heart disease, senility, obesity, cancer and other degenerative diseases associated with aging. Coconut oil also contains capryllic acid as well as lauric acid, both of which are anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-microbial. It has long been known that caprilyc acid is the most potent yeast-fighting substance, making it an excellent choice for those working with releasing candida and other inner ecology imbalances. Transitioning to coconut oil as one’s fat source also helps to normalize blood sugar levels while increasing energy, building a healthy immune and nervous system and reducing the overall stress on one’s body. It is necessary to note that a ‘therapeutic dose’ of coconut oil consists of daily doses of two to three (or more) tablespoons for an adult.

Cooking with coconut oil is a delightful way to introduce this supplement into your life. Try using it instead of margarine, butter or other vegetable oils. Also, consider using fresh coconuts that are not too old (i.e., forgo the coconut shavings and buy a whole coconut instead). The flesh is primarily fat, and it can be chopped and eaten with fruit for a delectable treat. Coconut oil is also great as an oil for veggies, tossed into your morning smoothie or slathered on bread with spices or preserves. If you’re looking for a way to enhance oats or rice, coconut oil adds a special note to a normally humble dish.

Repairing and nourishing to the skin, coconut oil has been used for thousands of years as a skin moisturizer because it is ideal for all skins types, including dry, rough and wrinkled skin. Aromatherapy uses two types of coconut oil: fractionated and virgin. Virgin coconut oil is solid at room temperature and blends well with essential oils for a thick, nourishing body oil, which does not leave a greasy feel. The same oil that is used in cooking can be used in body care products. Fractionated coconut is a liquid oil that is made when the coconut molecule is cut to a smaller size. This process does not deplete the oil’s healthy qualities, but instead allows us to use coconut oil in a liquid state – an excellent quality in massage applications. Also, fractionated coconut absorbs quickly, does not have a coconut odor and has an extremely long shelf life, all pluses in many situations. Coconut is also blended with other carrier oils, such as jojoba, to create a luscious cream base. Creating your own body care items with coconut oil and essential oils is a lovely, and easy, way to enhance your personal health.

One more thing about the fabulous coconut: this oil is great for use in sexual play. Both the taste and smell of coconut add to the delights of intercourse. A great way to experience coconut is by mixing it with vanilla and cacao oils. Smooth this concoction over your lover’s skin and enjoy.

If you’re searching for a multi-use, healthy oil, search no further than the coconut. Whether you use it in skin blends, salads or massage creams, the coconut is an all-around excellent choice as both a carrier and edible oil. It takes essential oils beautifully and will not leave your skin feeling heavy or greasy. Use it in its many forms and see how this unique plant continues to benefit us in our day to day lives.

The Joy Of Collecting Recipes

Posted by Adriana Noton on Friday, 5 March, 2010

Recipes are used for making that special dish for the first time, enhancing a meal that you have made many times but now want to change, or for just adding to a marvelous collection of ideas for meals for the future.

A recipe can consist of only two ingredients or so many you cannot even fit them on your countertop. It can be as simple as simply stirring, or very complex, like dredging in flour, then dipping into a beaten egg, then covering with bread crumbs, quick-frying and then finally baking the port chop. Yes, for a simple port chop. But many times you will find that the more effort you put forth in preparing the meal, the better it tastes in the end.

Most cooks have several very important ingredients that are put in almost every dinner recipe they make. These may be onions and garlic. Or perhaps herbs like thyme and basil, or a combination of Italian seasonings. This same cook may also have ingredients in the cupboard that he or she bought for one special meal on an occasion, and it has been sitting in that cupboard ever since. This might be liquid smoke, or fenugreek.

Perhaps the greatest experiments with recipes are those from other countries. You can try something Greek, like moussaka, or Italian, like lasagna, or East Indian, like lamb korma, or Mexican, like carne asada tacos.

You will find that the main difference between the different ones of various countries is the spices they use. In Greece, they use a lot of cinnamon on their meat to sweeten it up. Italians like their tomato sauced spiced up with oregano, basil, and thyme, among other spices. In India, the use of turmeric, cumin and coriander go far. Mexicans use a lot of cayenne and chili powder. And the list goes on.

You will discover that the joy of collecting healthy recipes will easily take over your book shelves. You will have recipe books on fish, steak, potatoes, desserts, casserole dishes, meatless meals, poultry, crepes, Christmas, and wok cooking, to name a few. Then there are the recipe magazines that will overwhelm you. And do not forget about the recipes you cut out from the newspaper, because you know you are going to try them some day.

You can stumble on collections in thrift shops. These are from clubs that people were members of and received them monthly and put them in binders. Or you will run across other types of collections that resemble a set of encyclopedias. There are annual collection recipe books for the year. And you would not want to pas up some of those really old cook books. They usually have a couple of really great classic formulas that you thought you would never find. Then there is the kind of collection that can drive a cook crazy, when they put them all in the index box. The best thing about these 4×6 inch cards is that you do not have to mess with a book closing on you while cooking.

Yes, you can collect recipes your whole life, fill an entire room with recipes. But the best cooks in the world do not even use them.

Healthy food can be hard to find these days. Eggs are very healthy and nutritious for breakfasts, and are extremely easy to prepare, especially with these online healthy recipes.

If You Like Spaghetti Carbonara You Will Really Enjoy This !

Posted by Steve S Lobston on Saturday, 27 February, 2010

Spaghetti, Carbonara is an Italian pasta dish using eggs, pecorino romano, guanciale, and black pepper. The dish was formulated in the middle of the 20th century.

The dishes vary, although all agree that cheese (Parmesan, pecorino, or a mixture), egg yolks (or whole eggs), cured fatty pork, and black pepper are basic. The pork is fried in fat (olive oil or lard); a mixture of eggs, cheese, and butter or olive oil is combined with the hot pasta, cooking the eggs; the pork is then added to the pasta. Guanciale is the most traditional meat, but pancetta is also used. In the US, it is regularly made with American bacon.

Cream is not common in Italian recipes, but is used in the United States, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia and Russia (especially in Moscow). Other Anglo/Franco versions on carbonara could very well include peas, broccoli or other vegetables added for colour Another American version includes mushrooms. Plenty of these preparations have more sauce than the Italian versions.

In all versions of the recipe, the eggs are added to the sauce raw, and cook (coagulate) with the heat of the pasta itself.

Try this spicey version !

This spicy interpretation of spaghetti carbonara is made with common ingredients including bacon, garlic, black pepper, red pepper, parmesan cheese, olive oil, cream, and eggs.

Serves 8

Ingredients for Spicy Spaghetti Carbonara:

1 pound bacon (cut into 1/2 inch pieces)

2 pounds spaghetti or other pasta

2 pasteurized eggs (equivalent of 2 eggs, pasteurized)

1/8 pound grated parmesan cheese

16 ounces whipping cream (1 pint)

3 tbsp butter or olive oil (or mixture of two)

2 tsp Red Wine Vinegar

1 clove Garlic (minced)

1 tsp Crushed Red Pepper (or more to taste)

1 tbsp Black Pepper (or more to taste)

Instructions

Bring a large pot of water to a boil whilst cooking the bacon.

Cook the bacon until it starts to become crisp and the majority of the fat has cooked out. Drain the fat. Add the butter or olive oil, garlic, and black pepper. Keep cooking for 3 to 5 more minutes.

Add the pasta to the water and cook as directed. At the same time, add the cream and vinegar to the bacon, stir and cook over medium heat until the sauce thickens (it should be the right consistency at about the same time that the pasta is done). While the sauce is thickening (and the pasta cooking) thoroughly blend the eggs with the red pepper and grated cheese.

When the pasta is done, drain, and put in a serving bowl. Add the egg and cheese mixture and toss. While tossing, add the bacon and cream sauce. It is beautiful. Hope you enjoy !

Understanding Versatile And Durable Stone Ware Dinner Ware Sets

Posted by Mary Bell on Sunday, 21 February, 2010

When considering stone ware dinner ware sets understand, first of all, that this attractive and durable form of dishware is a cousin to more delicate, costly and finely-detailed porcelain dishes, cups, saucers and other dishware. Stone ware comes from a kiln after being fired or baked between temperatures of 1200 and 1400 degrees Fahrenheit and can look as handmade or homemade as is wanted by a consumer.

Also, as opposed to more expensive porcelain, stone ware makes for an excellent daily-use dish set because it’s so strong. It’s been found to be safe for use in the oven as well as for refrigerator storage and microwave usage. It can also go into the dishwasher, withstanding temperature extremes that are impressive. In fact, the material is prized for its ability to evenly distribute heat across its surface, as well as its durability.

The history of such dining utensils as stone ware shows a direct link back to the original earthenware pottery that was created by some of the earliest civilizations that sprang forth in the Fertile Crescent of Mesopotamia. It differs from that pottery in that it’s more durable, is created at higher firing temps and is watertight. The ancient Chinese first pioneered its use, where it eventually spread into Europe.

In the late 17th century, British dinner ware manufacturers Wedgwood and Staffordshire were known throughout the empire for their sets, and their use had become widespread. After the Revolutionary War, American makers up in New Jersey and New York started making their own dinner ware along with butter churns and even tobacco pipes. The material was indeed proving to be extremely versatile.

Eventually, the non-porous nature of the basic material proved to be a stable platform for the addition of glossy and attractive glazes. This included a sought-after dark brown offering known as Albany Slip. The late 1800s saw many different glazes being created, which gave rise to one of the 20th century’s most popular forms, the Bristol glaze. It’s still valued to this day, by the way.

These days, antique and vintage stoneware dinner sets have become popular collectibles. Prices will of course vary and depends upon the sizes of the dinner set pieces and the old pottery making company that produced the sets. The kinds of glazing and decorations also play a role in determining how collectible they’ll be as well. A good place to look for such items is in the catalogs of many New England antique stores, by the way.

The history of stone ware dinner ware sets go back to the first dinner implements ever to emerge from a small firing oven or kiln. Today, many stores and online dinner ware catalogs offer this versatile and durable dinner ware though many are actually earthenware and not the real thing. Stone ware is distinguished by its weight and size, so check the backs of the plates and also how heavy they seem if looking for the actual dinner ware.

Aromatic Wood Chips Enhance The Flavor Of Barbecued Food

Posted by Stephen Daniels on Friday, 19 February, 2010

Spring is almost here, and with it comes all the favorite outdoor activities we’ve been missing. With the advent of warmer weather, barbecue grills will be fired up in backyards all over America. Yet surprisingly few grill chefs are aware of a simple BBQ accessory that can greatly enhance their food: natural wood chips to impart an authentic smoky flavor.

Before the barbecue, wood smoke was what was used to cook meats and vegetables over an open fire. The wood smoke enhanced the taste of grilled foods much more than either gas or charcoal. Using wood is easy and rewarding, in many cases replacing the need for seasonings or spices by imparting subtle, natural flavors derived from the wood itself. Whether purchased from a specialty store along with other barbecue accessories, harvested from your own back yard, or picked up from an orchard that might be tree trimming, many types of wood can be used to pump up the flavor of grilled foods. Another bonus is that wood smoke works equally well whether you are cooking right on the grill or using a rotisserie.

Chunks, chips or pellets of wood are all used for flavor when grilling. Often, veteran grill chefs prefer chunks of wood that are fist-sized or larger. These slow-burning pieces can typically be added to the fire just before placing the food on the grill without the need for replenishment during cooking. Smaller wood chips and pellets are too quickly burned if they are directly on the heat source. Instead, it is necessary to protect them from the direct fire while still letting them smoke during cooking. Many accessories exist for this purpose, including refillable baskets. You can also purchase pre-filled units with your choice of wood chip flavors. Since chips and pellets burn quickly, they should be checked often so more can be added if required.

Many types of trees have wood that is particularly good for enhancing flavors during grilling. Each variety will give food a unique taste. Hickory is probably the most common type of wood used for smoking, but others are increasing in popularity for use with different meats. Oak imparts a more subtle flavor than hickory or mesquite, so it works well with many different meats. The sweet flavor of cherry wood is often used for grilling fish, and apple is a favorite with pork ribs.

The possibilities for creating unique, delicious flavors with natural wood chips, chunks or pellets are almost endless. Novice to expert grill chefs everywhere can easily employ this technique to enhance their food this spring, and all year round.

If you’re searching for easy to use wood chip BBQ accessories, why not try the FlavorDome Grill Smoker? Its dome top reduces flare-ups, increases smoke density and smoking time, plus it traps bitter tars to give a cleaner smoke flavor.
